Nothing too exciting from Hubert today. He’s just resting on the toothpicks, as he typically would. I thought I would use this blog post to showcase just what kind of cup Hubert is in. I’d say it’s a pretty decent size for him. He has enough room to fly around as well as some places to rest, and of course, there is food. Speaking of which, he seems to like to do that when no one is watching. I was lucky enough to catch him the one time, but I almost never see him do it. Do butterflies have trust issues? Or do they just not eat as much as one normally would?

Last night before bed, I caught Hubert eating. I hadn’t seen him do that before, so I decided to take a picture of it and post it along with this blog post! I honestly never imagined a creature this small having a tongue/suckle of that size. Nature really is powerful.

As of right now, Hubert is simply chilling on the toothpicks I added to his cup. I think he really likes them, and I think he forgives me for freaking him out yesterday (hopefully). The bananas seem to be holding up for now, too, so it may be a while before I change his food again. Other than that, it’s just a normal day for Hubert. Nothing too exciting.

Today was an interesting day for both Hubert and me, and I think Hubert is eternally hateful of me because of it. The strawberries began rotting so bad that they were turning into a moldy rotten juice of some sort, and I was concerned it would touch Hubert and make him unable to fly, possibly killing him. So I decided to take his cup, put him in a temporary cup (which was a very long and hard process because I also didn’t want him flying around my room), wash his old cup, dry his old cup, and then put him back into his old cup with some bananas as an apology. I also gave him more toothpicks because he seems to like to hang out on those. I’m guessing that’s because they provide a better traction than the cup itself.

Now, however, Hubert is simply sitting at the bottom, not even considering the abundance of food around him, judging me. I may have dampened his wings a little bit, which I was afraid would happen. But I couldn’t have kept him in the previous conditions like that. There would have been more water than toothpick, and he surely would have died then. I probably won’t give him strawberries anymore, because that’s what made this mess in the first place.

I’m sorry, Hubert. I hope this doesn’t make me a bad butterfly mother.

Not my best picture, I’ll admit, but that’s not the point here. I tried replacing Hubert’s food, but he was guarding it pretty well, and I’m honestly scared he’ll fly out on me and I won’t be able to catch him. I did give him one of my strawberry scraps though, so at least he has more food. One more problem though is that the other strawberries are turning into liquid. Which means I’ll have to wash and dry this cup. Which means I’ll have to make a temporary cage for Hubert. It’s just a butterfly, yet it definitely feels like more of a house pet.

Hubert has decided that today is the day to hang out sideways in his cup. I know he’s not dead because he wouldn’t have the strength to hold onto the side of the cup if he was. He probably just felt in a rebellious mood today (as we all sometimes do) and is happy to be where he’s at right now. Nothing else has really happened, though the strawberries are getting moldy again. I’m debating whether to replace them today or tomorrow, just because the other one hasn’t started molding yet. Though Hubert doesn’t seem to care either way.

Hubert is once again guarding his strawberries. I haven’t seen him eating them yet, but they do look a little different from yesterday, so I’m assuming he has. He liked hiding under the strawberries yesterday, but I wasn’t able to get any good pictures with that. I think he did that when he was mad at me, so he was probably using that time to chill out. Other than that, nothing really knew has happened. Hubert’s just being himself.

I have successfully replaced Hubert’s food. He was not very happy with me because it’s hard to put the food in without scaring him. However, I think it all worked out in the end. I have to say though, I’m really proud of this photo I took. You can really see just how complex Hubert’s anatomy is. I had no idea his thorax had so much fur on it, and his eyes look really menacing despite being such a small creature. Needless to say, this will not be the first time I replace Hubert’s food, which means there will be more torture to come (and by no means is it on purpose.) I hope he forgives me.

The strawberries in Hubert’s cup are starting to get really moldy. I’ll have to remove them later on today, if not tomorrow. The only problem is that Hubert REALLY likes hanging out on the toothpicks that I use to give him his food without nearly crushing him to death. But they really aren’t becoming safe to eat. Oh, Hubert, what to do about you…

I added another strawberry to Hubert’s cup. He seems to be content with it, but he was a bit of a spaz when I put it in. Seeing as Hubert is so small and the strawberry I gave him is about his size, if I were him, I would be scared too. My big concern is getting the finished food out of his cage, but I’m starting to get ideas. Other than that, nothing much has happened with Hubert. Though I wonder what else he might like in his cup…

Hubert wishes everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day! Last night, I have Hubert some strawberries (butterflies like fruit!) and a paper towel that has sugar water on it. He seems to be enjoying them, and he also likes to rest on the toothpick, so it seems. I scared him a little bit and nearly crushed him on accident when putting the fruit in there. However, he seems to be doing just fine regardless.

I’m not sure when I’m supposed to replace the food (if at all), but I will be sure to look into that over the weekend.
